You need to be ready when you bring a new puppy into your home. Here are 6 essential must-haves that you need at home for your new best friend:

1.  A crate, box or kennel – Whether it is plastic or metal sided, your number one training tool is going to be in the crate. This is the place where your puppy will be safest when you are not able to keep on an eye on him. You will be grateful for it because it is what will protect your remote controls, shoes and furniture from your puppy’s bouts of energy!
2.  Baby gates – With baby gates, you can section off your home and confine your puppy to rooms that have floors that are easy to clean. They are also great tools to help keep track of him when you are busy with cooking, cleaning or are just hanging out.
3.  Furniture protectant – When you bring your new puppy home, make sure that you are armed with furniture protectant, such as Scotchguard. The trick you need to remember is to spray the product onto a clean surface, so make sure that you get your couch or rugs thoroughly cleaned first. House training your puppy is one of the first things you will be doing when you bring him home and accidents will happen, so make sure that you have furniture protectant always.
4.  House-training pads – Speaking of accidents, if you are bringing home a new pup, wee pads are an absolute essential. The pads come with a pet-detectable scent that attracts dogs when they need to go for a pee break. Place the pad near the door where you would like to train your puppy to wait when he needs to go outside. These pads are great for adult dogs too!
5.  Distilled white vinegar – When your puppy has an accident, you will need a household carpet cleaner to clean up the mess. After that, use a solution of water and distilled white vinegar. Since dogs do not like the smell of vinegar, you can prevent your pup from using that area as a place to pee again in the future.
6.  Lint rollers – When you bring a pup home, one of the things you need to think about is fur on the couch, chairs, rugs, etc. Having a lint roller at hand will save you a lot of time and energy cleaning up what your furry friend sheds. You will obviously need a vacuum cleaner too, but a lint roller is helpful for quick touch-ups.

 

Puppy food, treats and water bowls, a pet placemat, collar and tags, puppy-safe toys and pet stain and odour remover are all items that you need as well, when you bring your new puppy into your home. Keep in mind that he may take a little longer to adjust to his new home than you expect, as not all pups are the same; so above all else, you will need patience and of course, a whole lot of love!
