Whippets are sight hound breeds that originated in England. They have descended from greyhounds and hence, resemble the Greyhound slightly. These dogs are easy to maintain, having few health problems. They were considered unsuitable for hunting, but became popular in dog races. They have the highest running speed of their breed.
Medium in size, weighing around 15 to 42 pounds, these dogs have a unique way of running known as a double suspension gallop. This is what helps them achieve such high speeds. While running, all four legs are off the ground twice in each stride.
Whippets are quiet and intelligent animals. They are not prone to barking. They are generally gentle and will enjoy spending their time resting. However, regular exercise is a must for these animals. Being gentle, they serve as dignified pets if kept in the house. Their sensitive nature encourages them to be trained with positive reinforcement and not harshness.
