This is another type of herding dog. Collies include many related land races and formal breeds. They originated in Scotland and Northern England. They have a distinctive white pattern over their shoulders. Some of these breeds are still working dogs used for herding cattle and other livestock, but largely they are kept as pets. They are sometimes used as show dogs or for dog sports.
They are active and agile and most of them have a strong innate herding instinct. Collies are well-known for their stamina. They are easy to train and thus are owned widely. The Border Collie is one that is meant to perform a job while the remaining breeds are apt for family life.
Collies are medium in size and are fairly light in build. They have a pointed snout. The cattle-herding breed is usually stouter. They have naturally long or bobbed tails. Their fur may be short, flat or long. They often have white under the belly and chest though their main colours may differ.
