The Basset is a short-legged breed belonging to the hound family. Being scent hounds, they were originally meant for hunting. Their tracking ability and sense of smell is only second to the bloodhound. These dogs are usually bi-colours or tricolours of standard hound coloration.
Bassets are large, short, solid and long. Like the bloodhound, they have hanging skin structure and a curved tail that is held high above their backs. They are heavy and given their short legs are incapable of holding themselves above water for long. They have a medium, short, smooth, hard coat which sheds frequently.
The Basset Hound is a friendly, outgoing dog and enjoys playing. Thus, they have proven to be ideal for keeping at home as they are tolerant and patient with children as well as with other pets. They are active, affectionate and loyal and get along well with people. They are intelligent and independent dogs thus making training them a bit of a challenge.
