Beagle is a member of the hound group and has an appearance that is quite similar to a foxhound except that it has shorter legs and smaller ears. Beagles are scent hounds. Their express purpose was for tracking – whether hare, deer or other small game. They are often used for detecting prohibited foodstuff and imports at airports and check-posts.
This is a dog that is usually small to medium in size. The general appearance is of a foxhound but the head is broader and muzzle shorter. Their skull is smooth and a little domed. They have a strong jaw and large ears that are soft and rounded at the tips.
These adorable dogs have a very gentle temperament. Intelligent but single-minded, they are always amiable. Neither aggressive nor timid, they are usually described as “merry.” They are very friendly in nature and can be easily won over therefore they would not serve as good guard dogs.
